As stated by a senior defense official, the US armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”

Context and Recent Actions

The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.

Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Actions Amid Pressure

The government has faced increasing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.

Although the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”

This suggests the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's current government.
