Russia Increasingly Attacking Trains as Strikes on Ukraine's Train Infrastructure Escalate

As reported by a senior Ukraine's official, strikes on the nation's rail network have grown three times since mid-year as the Kremlin attempts to cripple one of the nation's crucial transportation networks.

Significant Destruction and Growing Strikes

Railway experts state that attacks on the railway infrastructure since the start of 2025 have caused losses reaching approximately $1 billion.

"Looking at precisely the previous 90 days, assaults have grown threefold," emphasized the official. "From the beginning of the year there have been numerous attacks on railway infrastructure, and over 3,000 train facilities have been destroyed."

The minister also noted that current increasing assaults specifically aim at trains, with specific focus on eliminating locomotive operators.

Essential Importance of Railways

In a territory as large as Ukraine, the train systems form a vital transportation lifeline. According to government data, the train system moves more than 63% of the state's goods – comprising grain shipments – and 37% of travelers.

Security support from international partners regularly reaches the nation by train. Following the full-scale war commenced, no passenger air facilities have stayed in service, making train transport the main means for individuals to travel in and out of the state, comprising arriving foreign officials.

Targeted Unmanned Strikes

Railway officials emphasize that the danger goes beyond just the number of strikes. "It's not just about the amount [of attacks]," remarked a senior infrastructure executive, "but also the tactics of the enemy forces."

Advanced targeted drones now enable attackers to target specific locomotives with growing precision.

Defense Measures

National experts have implemented numerous defensive measures to safeguard the railway infrastructure, encompassing:

  • Outfitting locomotives with advanced equipment to neutralize aerial attacks
  • Creating specialized air defense teams from among railway staff
  • Implementing crisis measures during aerial alarms

Area Effects

Recent attacks have significantly impacted important train facilities around Ukraine. A particular significant facility in the eastern territory suffered severe destruction from a drone strike, with the primary structure severely damaged and several areas rendered unusable.

"This occurred during the nighttime and all personnel was asleep," stated the facility manager. "I was awakened from the huge explosion because I live very close to the facility. The attack took place at 2:44 am."

The director noted that the terminal's important situation as a key intersection point – linking numerous key destinations – made it a key objective for attackers.

Persistent Risks and Problems

Train personnel report that current risks remain significant, with strikers progressively attacking locations where individuals congregate, tracks, trains, and power lines.

Aerial alarms now trigger prompt emergency protocols, including ceasing all rail activity and evacuating travelers to shelters.

Tactical Objectives

Analysis indicates that the assaults serve multiple key strategic objectives:

  1. Crippling southeastern logistics networks to prevent the movement of goods to maritime terminals
  2. Interrupting train movement near battle areas
  3. Systematically eliminating infrastructure in key territories

Vulnerability and Long-term Worries

Defense specialists observe that rail vehicles constitute especially exposed targets for aerial assaults due to their fairly slow speed and anticipated courses.

As Russian drones continue to develop in both distance and capability, more sections of the rail infrastructure fall within attack range.

"When the attackers continue hitting multiple trains, the time will come very quickly when the railway will still be functional but we'll have nothing left to operate on it," cautioned a defense specialist.

Despite the persistent strikes, local rail services continue to work, with travelers still to wait for passes and enter trains for cities across the country.
