The megacity Rises to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" category.
Alarming Pollution Levels
Several parts of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x exceeding acceptable standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Developments
Since 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that covers the capital as colder weather approaches.
Nevertheless recently, the current regional government approached the judicial authority to propose a modification of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".
Court Decision and Reality
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific periods throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Numerous recording stations throughout the capital showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Effects
Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from across the border following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have continued as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Near celebratory seasons, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.
Various Contamination Sources
This crisis in Delhi is caused by a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the city as colder air arrives.
Health and Economic Impact
The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can result in malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 early deaths annually in the city.
