The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
