The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
