Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Incoming President.
In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Centered On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to tackle rising crime and significantly reduce immigration.
He repeatedly cited migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he issued an final demand for them to depart before the new term begins or face removal.
His plans envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing detention centers, barriers, electric fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northernmost border.

Ruling Lacking a Clear Majority
Despite his clear electoral victory, Kast does not have an absolute majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation might challenge his agenda, including a promise to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"We have several questions about what a Kast administration will look like that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will implement them," noted a political professor.
The analyst added, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts typical of the right-wing. But the area with far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the race."
