What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
