Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the south-west.

Broad Extreme Heat Alerts Across the Region

These conditions follow this month's fires in another state, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in areas within South Australia and NSW, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, delivering intense heat to a broad swath of the region.

The mix of extremely dry land and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous situation for emergency crews.

Global Weather Extremes Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into darkness last week after strong winds compromised the urban power grid, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial damage to electrical infrastructure is anticipated to create ongoing issues as utility companies work urgently to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Unusual Fog Covers Typically Clear Area

At the same time, a region famed for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A specific type of fog, which typically lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by exceptional fall precipitation that left the ground saturated.

Storm Delivers Snow to Tourist Islands

Turning to another country, a weather system has brought intense rain, powerful gales and even snowfall to a group of islands – weather many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unknown at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the deepest snow depths since 2016 to a national park, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, strong northerly winds swept across the island chain, with gusts reaching 50mph observed on multiple locations. The influence of the weather event is forecast to ease this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
